Tottenham fans will have woken up on Tuesday morning feeling much better about life after the club secured a late deal for Mathys Tel on deadline day, and the Lilywhites have now confirmed what shirt number the club’s newest addition will be wearing.
Spurs manage to get Tel deal across the line
With a couple of days left in the window, it looked like Tottenham’s efforts to secure a deal for Tel were dead in the water, but in the final hours of the transfer window, the club managed to somehow rescue the deal.
The North London side reportedly saw off competition from the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea to secure the 19-year-old on loan, with an option to make the deal permanent for £45.7m in the summer.
According to reports from Germany, the option to buy will turn into an obligation if Tel plays a certain number of matches before the end of the season, but the player himself would have to agree to a move to Tottenham first.
What number will Mathys Tel wear at Tottenham?
Tottenham have now confirmed that Tel will be donning the number 11 shirt until the end of the season.
The Frenchman will add to Ange Postecoglou‘s attacking stocks, with his ability to play across the front three giving the Spurs head coach plenty of options to choose from.
The previous owner of the number 11 shirt was Bryan Gil, who is currently on loan at Girona, while it was worn by fan favourite, Erik Lamela, before that.
The number has plenty of history attached to it, previously being worn by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart, and Tel will be hoping to follow in their footsteps and become a hero among the Spurs faithful.
Tottenham have also announced that personalisation with Mathys’ name and number is now available via the Spurs Shops.

The reaction from the Bayern fans after the announcement that the deal involves an option to buy says it all, with the German club’s supporters far from happy with the agreement.
That shows just how highly the 19-year-old is rated at the Allianz Arena. At Tottenham, he now has the perfect platform to express himself and showcase the qualities that have made him so highly sought-after.
While adapting to the Premier League will be a big challenge for the youngster, Spurs know that they potentially have a top-class player on their hands if they can get the best out of Tel, which Postecoglou will fancy his chances of doing.
