Mathys Tel makes Odobert admission in his first Spurs interview
Mathys Tel admits that he is over the moon to finally become a Tottenham Hotspur player, and it turns out fellow Spurs winger, Wilson Odobert, may have helped the cause this month.
Huge Tel transfer turnaround on deadline day
Coming into the final 24 hours of the transfer window, it seemed like Tottenham’s chances of securing Tel were completely dead.
This was after it emerged a few days ago that Tel had said no to Spurs after they had reached an agreement with Bayern Munich for his transfer.
However, the situation changed out of nowhere in the final hours of the window as the North London club managed to hammer out an agreement with the player.
Mathys Tel delighted to become a Spurs player
The 19-year-old has now sealed his move to Tottenham on loan and his arrival comes as a major boost to Ange Postecoglou, significantly adding to the firepower at the Australian’s disposal.
The pacy and direct Frenchman, who has an eye for goal, will now aid Spurs in their hopes to end the trophy drought this season and work their way up the Premier League table.
Tel is very excited ahead of his new adventure in London, with the newcomer admitting that he cannot wait to get started at the club.
Watch what the teenager said in his first interview with the club’s official channel: “I’m very excited to play with my teammates and for the fans. It’s a new challenge for me, a new chapter to open and I’m very excited about it.
“Why I chose Tottenham? Because it was the best option for me. What was important for me was I felt the commitment. I spoke with the president, talked with the manager. I’m young, I need to grow up and that was for me the best option and now I’m very, very happy.
“I think I’m a physical player, fast, technical and I play every moment and every game with my heart. I live with this pressure. I always have to push myself to go up and look forward. Football is always a dream for me to play in the first team, for the best in the world.
“I’m ready for every game, that’s why I’m here and I know what I have to do for Tottenham, for the team and for the fans. I know what I have to do and that’s what I hope I’m going to do.”
Tel also revealed that he spoke with fellow France youth player Wilson Odobert about the move to Spurs. He said: “Yes I talked with Wilson. He told me: ‘Come, you have to come here’.
“He’s my friend, I played with him for the French team, we’re good friends and he told me to come because it’s a great team and you will see it’s very nice.”
Mathys Tel is a major coup for Tottenham
There are not too many better attackers that Spurs could have got this window than Tel, with the France Under-21 international being a great fit for Postecoglou‘s system and having a very high ceiling.
The Spurs boss will fancy his chances of getting the best out of the wide man while his arrival will also force the likes of Heung-min Son, Brennan Johnson and others to step up their game.
Perhaps, most importantly, signings like this can galvanise the squad and change the mood around the club, which Tottenham desperately needed to do.
