Tottenham’s Marc Guehi bid could spell the end of Cristian Romero – opinion

On deadline day, Tottenham made a strange bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi. Was it simply a desperate attempt to strengthen the squad, or does it suggest something more telling about the future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham?

A shock move in January – Tottenham’s Marc Guehi bid

As the January transfer window reached its frantic climax, Tottenham Hotspur found themselves in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Tottenham, scrambling for options on deadline day, stunned many by lodging a substantial £65 million bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

However, Palace swiftly rejected the offer, citing a lack of time to find a suitable replacement for such a crucial figure in their squad.

Guehi, a proven England international and a key player for Crystal Palace boasts the kind of experience that would elevate most Premier League backlines.

This makes Tottenham’s interest understandable, but it also poses a crucial question: why would Spurs, a club not known for splurging on backup players, make such an ambitious bid?

Why Tottenham’s bid could signal Cristian Romero exit

Spending close to £70 million on a rotational defender would be highly uncharacteristic of Spurs’ usually conservative transfer policy.

Given Marc Guehi’s profile and the timing of the bid, it may well be a precursor to Cristian Romero’s departure from Tottenham in the summer.

Romero has been a standout player for Tottenham since his arrival, becoming a cornerstone of the defence and consistently featuring in the Premier League and European competitions.

The Argentine centre-back, who played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign, has long been on the radar of Real Madrid.

While nothing materialised during the winter transfer window, there have been persistent rumours linking Romero to Los Blancos, a club currently dealing with their own defensive injury crisis.

Although the January window closed without a deal, there is every chance that a summer move could be in the works.

Cristian Romero’s growing frustration with Tottenham’s struggles to keep up with their top-six rivals, is another reason why his exit might not be too far-fetched.

Earlier this season, the Argentine centre-back was notably candid when asked if Tottenham had fallen behind their rivals in terms of investment and squad strength.

He commented, “The truth is, I would say no comment, but… Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, does not do well, strengthens again, and now they are seeing results.

“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it. The last few years, it is always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it is always the same people responsible.

“Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it is a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”

The 26-year-old’s pointed remarks, combined with Tottenham’s late January bid for Guehi, could suggest that the Argentine defender has grown tired of life at Spurs and is quietly eyeing a new challenge.

Although nothing is confirmed, the signs are there. Tottenham’s £65 million bid for Marc Guehi might well be an indication that they are preparing for a future without their World Cup-winning defender.

What the future could hold for Tottenham’s defence

Should Romero decide to leave Tottenham in the summer, it would be a significant blow for the club, but securing Marc Guehi could help mitigate the damage.

Guehi has proven himself as a reliable Premier League defender, and at 24 years old, he still has his best years ahead of him. His composure on the ball and ability to read the game would be a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system.
