Alasdair Gold reveals that one Tottenham midfielder is quickly emerging as a leader in the club’s changing room over recent months, with the player regularly offering a helping hand to the youngsters in the squad.

Tottenham man has had major setbacks over last two years

Just over two years ago, when Tottenham were still going strong under Antonio Conte, Rodrigo Bentancur was fast emerging as a linchpin of the side.

He had arguably been the club’s best player during the first half of the 2022-23 season, but since then, the midfielder has suffered multiple serious injuries, and a lengthy suspension, which has meant that he has not had the sort of continuity he would have wanted.

That is now starting to change as the Uruguayan is starting to build some momentum with regular Spurs starts under his belt, and it has now emerged that he is now taking up more responsibility in the set-up.

Rodrigo Bentancur is emerging as a Tottenham leader

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that several new leaders are now emerging from within this Tottenham group over recent months, with many at Hotspur Way pointing to Bentancur as the prime example.

The midfielder is described as ‘a growing presence in the team’ and a ‘rapidly developing leader’ as he looks to make up for his lost time.

It is explained that Bentancur’s improving English is one of the reasons why he has stepped up his communication with the young players in the dressing room.

Gold also points to several instances over recent weeks where the former Juventus man was seen geeing up or calming down the youngsters in the squad.

This includes Bentancur delivering a pep talk to Antonin Kinsky before kick-off against Brentford, and his gesture to a shattered Archie Gray after the win over Hoffenheim where the Uruguayan allegedly picked up the youngster off the ground and told him how well he had played.

Gold also adds that the midfielder was ‘a reassuring calming presence’ during Tottenham’s win at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday, revealing that he was constantly telling his teammates to remain calm and take a breath in possession.

Bentancur is now one of the senior statesmen in the side

This is a very young Tottenham team, particularly with the likes of Kinsky, Gray and Bergvall playing, and the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the likes of Bentancur to guide the youngsters through matches.

The 27-year-old is now vastly experienced at the highest level of both club and international football, and he is well placed to take up a leadership mantle in the side.
