It has been widely reported over the past few days that Postecoglou’s conversation with Tel was crucial to changing the youngster’s mind ahead of deadline day after he had rejected Tottenham’s first approach.

According to L’Equipe, the Australian spoke to the forward about how he will fit into his system and explained why he would terrorise Premier League defences as a part of the Spurs front line.

The outlet claimed that the teenager had previously said ‘no’ to Daniel Levy and Johan Lange, but after talking to Postecoglou, he decided that a move to Spurs would be the right fit for him.

Postecoglou has now reacted to the reports of Tel‘s change of heart and his initial reluctance to join Tottenham. The Spurs head coach praised the 19-year-old for being considerate and deliberate with his choice, insisting that the Frenchman has the required raw materials to evolve into a top player at N17.

When asked what he told Tel to get him to change his mind, Postecoglou responded (via Football.London): “People need to understand we’re talking about a 19-year-old player with a major decision, it’s not so much about rejecting us or anyone. He wanted to be comfortable with the decision. He didn’t want to be pushed in a certain direction, credit to him.

“I had a conversation with him and purely around the football and that I think he’ll find a great place here in terms of where is in his career. We’ve shown irrespective of age, he’ll get an opportunity and the way we play will suit him and what we have in the next few months and beyond it’s a perfect fit.

“It’s right that it took as long as it did so he’s comfortable with it. That he took so much time and was diligent, and made the decision when he had options, it meant the right mentality, right player, he’s ambitious, with self-belief and self-confidence and feels he can reach the very top.”

This challenge with Tel is right up Postecoglou’s alley, with the forward being extremely talented and raw, and needing the freedom and the backing to express himself on the pitch.

In Tottenham’s system, the youngster will have the liberty to be aggressive and direct, and the Australian coach will encourage him to take risks.

In theory, this looks like a match made in heaven, but only time will tell if the Spurs newcomer is up to the challenge.
