Tottenham fans are all saying the same thing about Mathys Tel debut
After a lot of chasing in the winter window, it did not take much time for French forward Mathys Tel to make his debut for Tottenham Hotspur and now Spurs fans have given their verdict.
Mathys Tel debut for Spurs
Mathys Tel’s debut for Tottenham Hotspur came just four days after signing for the Lilywhites. It was a debut from the bench as Ange Postecoglou handed Richarlison a start ahead of the 19-year-old in the Carabao Cup game against Liverpool.
The young forward’s moment came when Brazilian forward Richarlison, was taken off in the 45th minute, after an injury to his calf.
This saw Tel take up the number nine role against a spirited Liverpool side, who dispatched Tottenham Hotspur 4-0, and did not give him nor Spurs a sniff throughout the game.
Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Mathys Tel
With Tottenham Hotspur now out of the Carabao Cup and Mathys Tel’s debut behind him, we took to Twitter to ask Spurs fans what they thought about the debut of their new signing.
Many Tottenham fans decided to sit on the fence, as there is a level of understanding given to the forward whose debut came against an in-form Liverpool side.
One fan said: “Tel was ok. Showed a lot of heart but had no understanding with his new teammates. Seems to have a good attitude so will see improvement soon.”
Another fan could not give a verdict on the forward’s debut, rather, he had stern words for the team in general, Elkku said: “Can’t say nothing because our other players didn’t even try to help him in any way.”
Just like Elkku, Trader_007 also felt that Tel’s teammates did not help him as much on his debut. He said: “Had zero service so can’t judge him. Dreadful performance by the senior players.”
Tommy Pickles, as well, blamed the forward’s teammates for his rather quiet debut, he said: “If you don’t have a midfield you can’t blame the striker.”
Ben H, took a more optimistic view of his debut and highlighted some of the forward’s qualities. He said: “Assured touch, plenty of movement (even if nobody used it, happy to receive the ball in tight spaces. has a bit of urgency to his game, unlike many of our players. Excited to see more of him”
Tottenham Hotspur fans spot Mathys Tel’s leadership quality
Mathys Tel, who captained France’s U17 side to European glory in 2022, is no stranger to leadership and this was in full display in his 45-minute debut.
One Tottenham fan, Grant, said: “Under the circumstances, it’s hard to judge him !! But for a young lad who has only just got to the club and playing his debut!! I can’t fault his attitude shouting at senior players to push up, close down and give him the ball!! That will do for me!! COYS!!”
Though not his full debut, Mathys Tel has shown glimpses of what he can bring to Tottenham Hotspur. He is quick, versatile, can handle the ball in tight spaces and is a great ball carrier.
However, given the quality of the opposition and the suddenness of his debut, it is hard to judge Tel from that one game. Aston Villa is up next and with the injuries in the squad, Spurs fans can expect to see Tel’s full debut soon.
