Daniel Levy tried to trick Spurs fans on deadline day – Keith Wyness claims
Former Aston Villa and Everton CEO Keith Wyness thinks the pressure from the Spurs fans is getting to Daniel Levy. He even accuses the Tottenham chairman of putting in a late bid as a “PR stunt” to appease the supporters.
Tottenham end the transfer window with a flurry
While Spurs‘ failure to act was a source of frustration for Tottenham fans throughout January, the North London side had a strong ending to the window. Late deals for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel were secured, who joined Antonin Kinsky as the three additions during the window.
Ange Postecoglou says he is happy with the players the club were able to bring in, talking about the difficulty of doing business in January and insisting that the players could not have been signed any earlier.
This was a point which has been seconded by the club’s technical director, Johan Lange, who remarked that while Tottenham were ready to do business on January 1, the deals only opened up in the latter stages of the window.
Keith Wyness smells something fishy with late Tottenham offer
Spurs could have potentially had an even more spectacular end to the transfer window as it was reported in the dying hours that they had failed with a £70m offer to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
Wyness questioned Levy‘s intention behind this offer and suggested that it might have simply been a PR stunt to relieve the pressure on him.
The former Villa CEO told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “They’ve (Tottenham) got the lowest wage-to-turnover ratio of the top clubs, so Daniel had been saving the (transfer) money for a rainy day.
“The pressure has come on him, and this Guehi move seemed to be a statement – but it didn’t get done. You would be angry as a Spurs fan, seeing that there was £70m behind the sofa when the problems have gone on for the last few weeks.
“I think it has come from the fan pressure. It should have been prepared for and sorted out in the few months before the window. It did smack of desperation. It looked like a PR stunt, to be honest.
“There are some questions about a £70million deal like that. It’s the soap opera that is Spurs, and they are the gift that keeps on giving at the moment.”
Did Daniel Levy pull off a Spurs PR stunt?
It is difficult to know whether the offer was Guehi was indeed a PR stunt, but what Levy and Lange can be judged by is the signings that they have delivered.
Kinsky, Danso and Tel are three excellent signings, particularly in a January window where deals were not easy to do.
Many of Tottenham’s Premier League rivals have ended up empty-handed despite being in desperate need of additions, which shows that Spurs have done well.
However, there is no doubt that more work needs to be done on the squad, and further investment is required into the midfield and the forward line in the summer.
