Spurs player ‘would like to’ join Man United this summer – Journalist says
Bild reporter Christian Falk has revealed some interesting details about the future of Mathys Tel, and has suggested that Spurs still have to worry about competition from Manchester United for the forward in the summer.
Spurs eyeing permanent Mathys Tel deal
Tottenham have the option to sign Tel permanently for an additional £45m next summer, but according to sources from Germany, the clause would only become active if the player himself greenlights a move to the Lilywhites.
Ange Postecoglou certainly appears confident that the forward will stay at Spurs beyond this summer, making it clear last week that the teenager has not just been signed for a few months.
The 19-year-old had a debut to forget for Tottenham, coming on just before half-time in the club’s 4-0 defeat at Anfield in the semifinal of the Carabao Cup.
Christian Falk claims Tel might prefer Man Utd move
Falk has now revealed that the France Under-21 international had reached an agreement with Man Utd, but the move was called off due to the Red Devils’ reluctance to pay the loan fee.
The journalist suggested Tel might be interested in a move to Old Trafford if Ruben Amorin’s side come knocking again in the summer.
Falk wrote in his Daily Briefing: “There were also talks with Manchester United who were interested in Mathys Tel’s signature. Tel was certainly open to the move, but United weren’t prepared to pay the loan fee Bayern Munich were demanding at the time (€5m).
“So, you see, there was a huge difference to the offer Tottenham came to the table with. Whether Tel stays with Bayern beyond the summer or moves on, it’s entirely up to him. If he can make the step to United, he would like to do it.
“If he sees a chance at Bayern Munich, perhaps he would also stay, but I think it’s hard for him, as he didn’t make it under Vincent Kompany. So, I think if he is performing very well, he will stay in the Premier League.”
Tottenham will need to have a strong end to the season
To convince Tel to sign permanently and to hang on to the likes of Cristian Romero, Spurs need to have a strong end to the season.
They need to show these players that they can fulfil their ambitions in N17. The jury is out on whether they will be able to do that, with the campaign going from bad to worse.
Postecoglou will be hoping that things start to change once his key players are back fit, and the one positive right now is that a number of them are not far away from returning.
