Football journalist Alex Crook has ripped into current Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou, stating that his second-season title claim is ridiculous – “He’s not managing Celtic anymore?”
A poor Tottenham Hotspur 24/25 campaign
The 24/25 campaign has been one of Tottenham Hotspur’s worst in recent times. The Lilywhites have been shocking all through this season as they have been constantly battling inconsistency.
Despite this, the club retains its trust and faith in their manager, showing a bit of understanding because of the horrid injury crisis currently ravaging the squad.
Sitting in 14th place in the league, while also bowing out of the Carabao Cup semi-final and FA Cup fourth round in the most disappointing way, Spurs’ season seems to take up a new low each week.
The current trajectory of the club is a far cry from what manager Ange Postecoglou had in mind when he said earlier this campaign, “Usually in my second season, I win things. That’s the whole idea.”
Alex Crook slams Ange Postecoglou’s second-season trophy claim
Alex Crook, speaking on talkSPORT is the latest pundit to rip into Ange Postecoglou trophy claims. He has gone as far as saying that managers fired before him are much better than the Australian.
He said: “It is a ridiculous thing to say, ‘I always win trophies in my second season.’ You put so much pressure on yourself. He is not managing Celtic anymore in what effectively is a two-horse race; he’s managing a Tottenham team who never win anything.
“So, to say, ‘I’m going to win a trophy this season,’ which is effectively what he was saying, puts so much pressure on himself.”
He continued: “Pochettino took Tottenham to a Champions League final and got fired. I keep coming back to that as a sliding door moment. If they stuck to Pochettino and they backed him in the transfer market, Tottenham then were on the brink of something special.
“Pochettino is a better manager than Postecoglou. Mourinho—his CV tells you he is a better manager than Postecoglou. Conte’s CV tells you he’s a better manager than Postecoglou.
“What Nuno is doing at Forest at this moment in time tells you that he’s a better manager than Postecoglou. So Daniel Levy, for me, has fired better managers than Postecoglou. Why should he stick with this guy?”
Ange Postecoglou needs to turn Tottenham’s fortunes around
During his rant, Alex Crook also highlighted a very interesting stat. He notes that this poor run-in results did not just start this season. In fact, it has long been happening since Ange Postecoglou’s “honeymoon period.”
He said: “This is a guy who everybody was lauding because of the start he made at Spurs—26 points from his first ten Premier League games.
“Since then, they’ve lost 20 out of 45 Premier League games. Apart from that first two-month honeymoon period, what has Ange Postecoglou done as Tottenham manager to come out with such a bold claim?”
The pressure is only going to keep mounting on Ange Postecoglou unless he turns things around quickly.
