Harry Redknapp is worried about interesting Spurs coaching staff trend

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has identified one common thing in manager Ange Postecoglou’s backroom staff as one of the club’s biggest issues this season.

It has been a rather bleak season for Tottenham Hotspur and manager Ange Postecoglou, who would have been hoping to build on the Lilywhites’ somewhat impressive fifth-place finish last season.

Rather than build on that finish, the Lilywhites’ current campaign is gradually becoming one of the worst for the club in the last decade.

In the League, the north London club, finds itself sitting in 14th place after 24 games. You will have to go back to 07/08 for the last time Spurs found themselves so far down in the Premier League.

It has been a tough season so far for the Australian manager, who has also had to contend with a series of injuries to some of his key players.

Harry Redknapp spots a major coaching problem at Tottenham

While injuries are a major reason for Spurs’ inconsistencies this season, former Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp, who led the club during one of its most successful spells, believes that Postecoglou’s managerial team are a contributing factor to the Lilywhites‘ recent decline.

He said speaking on talkSPORT: “Wherever Ange seems to go, he doesn’t take anyone with him. He comes in and he works with the people he takes over. He looks a very lonely figure to me.

“I watch him on the touchline and I never see anybody come up to him and go ‘eh, gaffer, Ange, what about this?’

“You gotta have people around you that have got opinions. It’s no good having people around you who go ‘oh, yes Ange or no Ange’. I do worry about that, I always took people with me who had strong opinions.”

Redknapp then said: “It seems to me there is one common denominator there, the coaching staff seems to have been there with all the managers that have come and gone. I just wonder if he could come and do with a bit of help there.”

Ange Postecoglou’s isolation is a concern worth looking into at Spurs

While I am no managerial expert, I do agree with Redknapp’s comments about Ange’s coaching staff. In the 4-0 thrashing against Liverpool this season, Postecoglou looked like an isolated figure down on the touchline.

When you compare that with other teams in the Premier League, that is rarely the case. At Manchester City, you almost always see Pep and his assistants conversing after each goal. Same at Liverpool, same at Newcastle United, same at Forest.

But at Spurs, Ange just stands looking clueless. It is something worth considering as well, because more often than not, when a manager joins a new team, he comes with his own backroom staff – this helps them to work towards a common goal and philosophy something Spurs seem to be lacking at the moment.
