Tottenham’s ‘big-chance’ conversion stat shows they are underperforming

0

Tottenham have had some struggles in front of goal over recent weeks, which is why Spurs fans might be surprised to learn that Ange Postecoglou’s men are outperforming every other side in the Premier League in a key attacking metric this season.

Tottenham’s issues in attack

At the start of the season, the main criticism of Spurs was the fact that they were too open at the back and were too easy to score against.

At the time, the Lilywhites were scoring goals for fun but were being let down by their tendency to concede soft goals on the other end of the pitch.

However, over the last couple of months, the goals have also started to dry up a bit in the Premier League for Postecoglou‘s men, partly down to the injuries that the club have had in their forward line and the struggles of players such as Heung min-Son.

Tottenham top of the tree in key attacking stat

Spurs have certainly been guilty of missing more than their share of clear-cut chances this season, which is why WhoScored’s latest revelation may leave Tottenham supporters surprised.

The data analysis outlet reveals that the Lilywhites have the best record across the Premier League when it comes to converting big chances.

They say that Spurs have hit the back of the net with 43.8 per cent of the big chances they have created this season, just beating out Manchester City’s ratio of 43.2 per cent.

That would imply that Tottenham are doing everything right when it comes to converting big chances, but they need to create more and be stronger at the main to turn those goals into wins.

Tottenham’s attack will be boosted this week

Spurs have not posed much of an attacking threat in their recent matches against the likes of Brentford, Liverpool and Aston Villa, but that might soon be about to change as Postecoglou is set to welcome several of his attackers back.

According to reports, the likes of James Maddison, Wilson Odbert, Timo Werner, Brennan Jonson and Dominic Solanke are all on the cusp of returning to action.

The Australian coach is thus expected to have plenty of options to choose from over the coming weeks, and he will be hoping that his side can start putting the ball in the back of the net with regularity once again.
