A long-awaited return of first-team players

Coming into the Manchester United clash, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has been handed a boost on the injury front, as several first-team players have returned to the squad.

Guglielmo Vicario, Udogie, Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Wilson Odobert are a few of the Spurs players who have returned to first-team training.

You have to go back to November for the last time Ange Postecoglou had this many first-team players fit and ready to play and help the squad.

The Lilywhites are set to go up against Manchester United, a team they have already played twice and secured a victory over in those meetings.

In their first meeting in the League this season, Postecoglou’s men secured a comfortable 3-0 win as goals from Johnson, Kulusevski and Solanke proved to be enough.

In the Carabao Cup, these two met again and it was a pretty end-to-end affair, as Spurs came out victorious in a seven-goal thriller.

Captain Heung-min Son will be hoping to silence his doubters this evening by adding to his 18 goals and assists in all competitions for Tottenham this season (TransferMarkt).

Today, the Red Devils have made a trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to take on the Lilywhites for the third time this season.

Throughout the first half, we analysed each player’s performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at our Tottenham vs Manchester United first-half player ratings.

Tottenham first-half player ratings v Manchester United

Guglielmo Vicario: Not many would have expected Vicario to be thrown right into the thick of it after a lengthy spell on the sideline. His return was less than straight forward as he had to make two good saves in the opening ten minutes – asides that pretty solid start. 7.

Pedro Porro: Porro has looked decent, but has struggled to cope with Garnacho on the right-hand side of the pitch. The United winger has already had a few good opportunities and if it is not rectified, it could be fatal. 5.

Kevin Danso: These performances from Danso are becoming normal as he appears to have fit into this Postecoglou’s system seamlessly. He has been tidy with the ball at his feet and his passing has helped Spurs progress the ball up the pitch. 6.

Ben Davies: It has been a reliable performance from Ben Davies who just like Danso, is looking to play ball in behind – no unnecessary sideways passes today – add to that a clean sheet. 6.

Djed Spence: Today’s setup allows for Spence to invert into midfield and while that helps stop transitions, it still leaves a big space in behind him and United have exploited it a few times. Asides that, he Son and Maddison have combined well on the left. 5.

Rodrigo Bentancur: Much better from Bentancur. He is doing his defensive bit, and also attacking the box – there is more energy and purpose to his play today. 6.

Lucas Bergvall: In typical Bergvall style, there has been a lot of running and a desire to win the ball. Just like Bentancur, he has the license to get into the box when the ball is wide and this has paid off, as it was his shot from inside the penalty area that led to Maddison’s tap in. 7.

James Maddison: The goalscorer and one of the injured players to be handed a start, Maddison has looked pretty solid. His passing has been crisp and accurate, add to that his goal to silence his critics. 9.

Dejan Kulusevski: It has been quiet performance from Kulusevski who has been pushed to the wings to accommodate Maddison’s return. He has been tidy with the ball and has tried to make things happen, but no end product just yet. 5.

Mathys Tel: It has been a solid home debut for the youngster, who has been deployed as the number nine in this one. He has dropped deep to linkup play and had a shot saved which could have made it 2-0. 5.

Heung-min Son: It is a much better performance from Heung-min Son today. The winger has looked to beat his, has whipped in a few dangerous balls into the box and generally has been sharp – a lot of running in behind. 6.5.
