Tottenham fans react to Djed Spence’s MOTM performance vs Man United
Tottenham Hotspur fans were full of praise for Djed Spence after his standout performance against Manchester United. However, concerns remain over his future in Ange Postecoglou’s lineup.
Tottenham Hotspur edge past Manchester United
Spurs secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with James Maddison’s first-half goal proving the difference.
Ange Postecoglou’s side controlled the game well, thanks to some outstanding individual performances. One of which came from Djed Spence, who was named Man of the Match.
Ange Postecoglou faced several selection dilemmas ahead of the fixture, with five players returning from injury. Destiny Udogie, a regular starter at left-back before his injury, was back in the squad. However, his absence allowed Spence to secure his place in the starting XI after consistent performances.
Before Udogie’s setback, Spence struggled for game time. Ange Postecoglou initially left him out of the UEFA Europa League squad but later reinstated him for the knockout rounds.
Against Manchester United, Spence delivered another standout display, recording 87 touches, nine passes into the final third, four recoveries, and winning six of his seven duels.
He also did extremely well going forward, setting up chances for Mathys Tel and Son Heung-min. His performance left Spurs fans highly impressed, sparking significant discussion online.
Tottenham fans react to Djed Spence’s performance
We took to X to ask Spurs fans their opinions on Djed Spence’s performance today.
Spence was widely regarded as the best player on the pitch. One fan stated, “MOTM and easily our best player since he took the starting place in our squad.” Another added, “Best man on the pitch, our best fullback.” Another supporter replied, “Well done, pity we don’t have another 10 of him.”
Despite the praise, some fans were concerned about Spence’s place in the starting XI now that Destiny Udogie has returned. ‘It’s kind of sad how inevitable it is that Ange bins him off the minute Udogie is ready,’ one fan wrote.
Another, however, hoped Pedro Porro would be rotated instead, saying, ‘Another great performance… looking forward to seeing him on the right when Destiny is back on the left.’
There were also frustrations regarding Spence’s treatment under former Spurs boss Antonio Conte. The full-back waited 884 days for his first start after signing for the club. One fan commented, “What Conte did to him should be illegal.” Another added, “Can’t say it enough, the mismanagement of this guy has been criminal!”
And if Spurs fans weren’t already hyping up Spence, some Real Madrid supporters even joined the conversation, with one predicting: “I could see him playing for Real Madrid in the future.”
What next for Djed Spence at Tottenham?
Well, regardless of how difficult it would be for Ange Postecoglou to make this decision, he’ll be happy with the depth and the number of options he has.
Despite Destiny Udogie returning to the bench, he did not feature. Many fans are calling for Spence to start on the right instead of Porro, allowing Udogie to return to his natural left-back role.
Pedro Porro found himself out of position multiple times today, including one instance where Alejandro Garnacho had a great chance to equalise but failed to finish.
One fan wrote, “He offers so much more than Porro going forward and especially defending.” While this might be a bit harsh, Porro remains one of the squad’s best crossers. He regularly creates chances out of nothing. Given his heavy workload this season, rotation might make sense. Udogie can continue on the left, while Spence shifts to the right where he still does just as well.
Another possible alternative is Archie Gray, though he has already spent much of his time playing out of position. While he could fill in at fullback, fans would want to see him in the number six role instead.
Interestingly, one supporter suggested, “We could be seeing the Gareth Bale progression, he could easily be playing as an attacking wing.” Even though this would seem odd, he has the qualities of a winger, and he’d probably do well upfront.
But for now, the most sensible option is to manage each fullback’s minutes wisely and rotate players so they could be more competitive. Probably one game Porro gets rested, and Udogie in the next, and then Spence.
