Tottenham figures show Daniel Levy has actually backed recent managers

0

There is a popular narrative around Tottenham Hotspur and Daniel Levy that they have not invested as much in the first-team squad as their rivals, but the figures of the club’s spending on wages and transfers show that the Lilywhites are spending huge amounts.

Spurs fans feel the club has not shown enough ambition

A lot of Tottenham supporters feel that the club have not prioritised the first team over the years and simply do not invest enough to compete with the top sides in the Premier League.

One can understand the frustration of fans, particularly with the Spurs hierarchy failing to deliver signings at the right time under the likes of Mauricio Pochettino when the team was on the cusp of doing something special.

However, the overall figures for Tottenham’s spending over the last decade paint a very different picture, showing that the club is keeping up with the spending of a lot of its rivals.

How much have Spurs spent over the last six years?

Since moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019, Levy has opened his purse strings as demonstrated by their figures regarding net spend on transfers and wages.

According to BBC Sport, when calculated from the 2016-17 season, despite having to build a billion-pound stadium, Spurs have the fifth-highest net spend in the Premier League since then.

The club had a transfer net spend of £551.8m during that time, which is a whopping £243m more than Liverpool’s net spend of £308m during the same period.

The report also reveals that over the course of the last decade, Spurs have the sixth-highest outlay on player wages across the Premier League.

Liverpool’s spending figures paint a clear picture

The fact that Liverpool have won everything over the last decade by spending considerably lower amounts than Tottenham and other members of the ‘big six’ shows that spending is not necessarily directly correlated with success.

The same is demonstrated by Man Utd, who have spent eye-watering amounts on transfers and wages during that time but have fewer top-four finishes to show for it than Spurs do.

This demonstrates that decision-making when it comes to recruitment and managerial appointments is much more pivotal for success than the outlay on transfers and wages.

Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy have made some poor decisions over the last five years, and that is what they must be criticised for.

The numbers clearly show that the supporters are who accusing the club of not spending enough or putting ‘profit ahead of glory’ (an ironic line when one considers Spurs have made losses for three years in a row) are misdiagnosing the problem.
