New owners unlikely to keep Daniel Levy at Tottenham, journalist predicts
The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has now shared what he has heard about Daniel Levy’s plans if Tottenham Hotspur are brought out by a consortium in the near future, but he may not get everything his own way.
We have heard plenty of speculation over potential investment or even a full buyout of Tottenham over the last few months, which might come as music to the ears of many Spurs fans, who want to see a change in ownership.
It emerged last week that a group of private investors from Qatar are looking to buy out Tottenham from ENIC and the other shareholders.
However, curiously, it was explained that if the Qatari investors are successful in taking over the North London club, they would hand Daniel Levy a long-term contract and allow him to continue running the club.
Dan Kilpatrick sheds light on Daniel Levy’s Tottenham plans
Kilpatrick has now confirmed that he has heard that the Tottenham chairman‘s wish is to continue at the helm of Spurs even if its ownership changes hands.
However, the journalist questioned if any new owners would want to stick with the 63-year-old, given the negative publicity such a decision would generate amidst the recent criticism aimed at Levy.
When asked about Levy potentially continuing as chairman in the event of a takeover, Kilpatrick said on Rule The Roost Podcast: “Yeah, I’ve heard the whispers. I believe, although the club has always denied it, that Levy did hold talks with Nasser from PSG a couple of years ago about a minority investment that never went anywhere.
“But there has been interest from Qatar. And I think it is fair to say that it’s kind of well-known and well-talked about that Levy would kind of like to stay on in the event of ENIC becoming potentially a minority partner. You know, I haven’t written that because I haven’t kind of been able to double-source it.
“But I don’t mind saying it because it’s been reported and yeah, it’s been rumoured for a while. I mean, in terms of my take on that, I find it very, very interesting because I think Levy does feel like, I hesitate to say the word toxic because it might be a bit strong, but you know, obviously, there’s a lot of unrest towards him by supporters.
“So it would be, it’s almost hard to imagine that a company would buy Spurs and then say we want to keep this guy who’s a kind of lightning rod for frustrations in place.”
Investors will appreciate Levy’s financial work at Spurs
While there is no doubt that Levy has failed to deliver trophies to Tottenham, he is considered to be among the best directors across all of global sport, given the way he has built up the club off the pitch.
Any potential investors will appreciate the work he has done and the revenue streams he has created at the club. The primary concern of anyone willing to invest several billions of pounds to buy Tottenham would be the club’s bottom line.
However, Kilpatrick makes a good point about the perception of Levy among Spurs fans and about the negative PR keeping him in charge will generate, which might dissuade any new owners from continuing with the 63-year-old.
