Daniel Levy struggles to take his financial cap off at Tottenham, sources say

0

The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has shared an interesting revelation from one of his sources on how Daniel Levy runs Tottenham and whether he does indeed have the club’s best interest at heart.

On Sunday, we saw a protest the likes of which we have not been used to at Tottenham, with thousands of fans marching against Daniel Levy and the club’s owners.

The theme of the march and the sit-in protest following the game was clear: the supporters feel that under this ownership, the success of the first team has not been prioritised.

Many point to the fact that Spurs have won just one trophy since ENIC’s takeover more than two decades ago as clear evidence that on-field success is not as important to this regime as financial success.

Daniel Levy focuses on what is financially best for Tottenham

A few days ago, a detailed report in BBC Sport did a deep dive into how Daniel Levy runs Tottenham by speaking to several sources who have worked with the Spurs chairman at the club over the years.

The outlet claimed that the 63-year-old was hurt by the chants against him as he feels he has always prioritised the needs of the club and has backed the recent managers he has employed.

Kilpatrick explained he had heard that Levy is often not able to separate what is financially best for the club from what is good for the footballing side of the business.

The journalist said on the Rule the Roost Podcast: “Someone said to me, a few years ago in fact, I asked them about Levy. It was after a controversial decision. I called someone up and said, ‘Do you think that Levy drove that?’ You know, why do you think he did it?

“And the contact said, ‘Look, the way to understand Daniel Levy is that he will always do what he thinks is best for Tottenham, but he always thinks what’s best for Tottenham is what’s financially best for Tottenham’.”

“But I wonder if, what he also is thinking is what’s financially best for the shareholders of Tottenham. And I think that was it.”

Spurs financial health cannot be divorced from on-pitch success

For a self-sustaining club like Spurs, who spend what they earn and cannot rely on owner funding, the financial health of the club cannot be divorced from the club’s overall health.

The one thing Daniel Levy deserves credit for is that by building the revenue streams he has, he has ensured that Tottenham will always dine at the top table for decades to come, irrespective of who the owner is.

However, there is no doubt that he has failed to create an atmosphere that breeds success on the footballing side, with almost all of his decisions over the last five years backfiring.
