UEFA change guidelines to allow Tottenham home game to go ahead

0

UEFA are reportedly set to make an exception to one of their guidelines on scheduling in order to allow Tottenham and one of their rivals to enjoy home advantage in the second leg of their next European tie.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men have earned a break from the Europa League over recent weeks as a result of sealing direct qualification to the Round of 16 stage.

Tottenham are set to play AZ Alkmaar in the next round, with the first leg set to be played on March 6 and the second leg on March 13.

Spurs will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home, but that poses a problem for UEFA as Chelsea also play their second leg at home on the same date in the Europa Conference League.

UEFA change guidelines to help Tottenham and Chelsea

The Daily Mail explain that according to UEFA’s rules, two clubs that share the same stadium, or city, or are located within 50km of each other, cannot host matches on the same day.

This would apply to Tottenham and Chelsea as the two clubs are in the same city, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium situated just 16km away from Stamford Bridge.

However, UEFA are set to make an exception to their same-city guidelines on this occasion by allowing both Chelsea and Spurs to play their European ties in London on the same evening.

The relevant authorities have now reportedly been given the green light for both games to go ahead on March 13.

Spurs’ season rests on the Europa League

With a top-six finish looking beyond Ange Postecoglou’s men in the Premier League, they will have to put all eggs in the Europa League basket and try to win the competition.

That will be easier said than done as there are some excellent teams still left in the tournament. However, if Tottenham have their key players back from injury, they will fancy their chances of beating any side over two legs.
