Ange Postecoglou answers the big Archie Gray midfield question at Tottenham

0

In a recent press conference, Ange Postecoglou has given a clue about when 18-year-old Archie Gray might finally get his chance in midfield.

One of the few positives for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur this season has been the emergence of several young talents.

A youngster who has shone is 18-year-old Archie Gray. The former Leeds United man has played an immense amount of games as a make-shift defender for Spurs since joining the club in the summer.

Injuries to Tottenham Hotspur’s main centre-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, prompted the manager to try unconventional solutions.

Archie Gray has rarely appeared in midfield for Tottenham

With the injury crisis subsiding and players returning, the belief is that Archie Gray’s appearances as a centre-back are expected to reduce significantly.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Ipswich Town, Ange Postecoglou has now provided the answer to a question that has been on the minds of Spurs fans.

When asked when we’ll see Archie Gray in midfield, the Tottenham manager told football.london: “The way it’s going, never, mate. You know, I was tempted to put him in goal because we were down a fifth goalkeeper.

“No, look, I think whatever happens, and I know people are sort of really keen to sort of put him in there, I think the experience he’s had this year is going to be outstanding for him and outstanding for us.

“He’s taken on every challenge we’ve thrown at him, not flustered, got on with it, performed at a really good level, contributed to the team all as an 18-year-old in his first year in the Premier League.

“He’ll get to where he needs to get to in good time, but this period here, I think, you know, is going to be enormously beneficial for him.”

Is Gray ready to play in midfield for Spurs?

Understandably, the manager seems to be cautious about throwing the midfielder right into the holding role. Playing as a pivot midfielder in the Premier League is a big jump for any player most especially an 18-year-old in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

This season alone, we have seen Bissouma and Bentancur all have nervy moments where their mistakes have led to goals.

The manager is right, it is an enormous task and he should continue to improve and refine his skills before making that big jump. However, a few brief cameos in games will be ideal too.
