Former club CEO claims Tottenham should find a new role for Daniel Levy
Former Aston Villa and Everton CEO Keith Wyness has now suggested that Daniel Levy could remain at Tottenham Hotspur despite a potential takeover of the club but suggested that the Spurs supremo’s role could be tweaked.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have heard major rumours that a group of Qatari investors are in talks regarding a full buyout of Tottenham.
The news has understandably got some Spurs fans excited, with many supporters wanting to see a change in ownership after the lack of success over the last two decades.
However, the Tottenham faithful might not be too pleased to hear rumours that the Qatari investors might allow Daniel Levy to continue as chairman in the event that their takeover bid is successful.
New Tottenham role mooted for Daniel Levy if takeover happens
Keith Wyness has now suggested that in the event of a takeover, the new owners could allow Levy to continue running the financial side of the business while stopping him from having any input on the footballing decisions.
He suggested that such a change would be welcomed by the Spurs fans and would represent the “best of both worlds” for the club.
Wyness told Football Insider: “If they could split the responsibility and put Daniel in charge of business affairs, it’d be great. If any new investor could stop him having any input in football, the fans would be happy. I think then you’d have the best of both worlds.
“There were huge protests at the Spurs stadium at the weekend, they are very unhappy. This could be a solution that would work. There’s no doubt there is a lot work still to be done around the stadium, like property development – and that could help the club go further.
“But I think he should stick to those areas, and the fans would demand that if a new investor came in. The Man United situation with Ratcliffe and the Glazers hasn’t worked out, but nevertheless – I think a football group could come in and lead the way forward. “It could be an exciting way forward.”
There is no evidence that Daniel Levy makes footballing decisions
There seems to be an ongoing narrative that Levy intervenes in the footballing decisions at Spurs, specifically on player recruitment.
We have absolutely no evidence of that and none of Tottenham’s recent managers (who are outspoken characters) have ever alluded to Levy’s interference as an issue.
One can understand the criticism directed at Levy from fans as he has ultimately failed to deliver trophies, but the criticism has to be more pointed and specific.
The Spurs chairman has to be held accountable for the bad appointments he has made over the years, including the sporting directors, recruitment staff and managers he has brought through the door.
Levy himself will point out that he has taken a big step back from the footballing side of the business, first when he hired Fabio Paratici as the managing director of football, then when he brought in Scott Munn as the chief footballing officer after the Italian departed.
