James Maddison trolled Ipswich fans with gesture after Tottenham win
Tottenham Hotspur secured their third successive Premier League win and one player was particularly pleased to put Ipswich Town to the sword.
Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his starting eleven for the trip to Portman Road with Archie Gray, Brennan Johnson and Destiny Udogie coming in for James Maddison, Pedro Porro and Ben Davies.
Some fans raised their eyebrows at Maddison dropping down to the bench especially following his impressive goalscoring performance in Tottenham’s 1-0 win against Manchester United in their previous game.
We did reveal ahead of Saturday’s fixture that Maddison had picked up a slight knock following the United victory and was not risked from the start by the Tottenham boss in East Anglia.
A brace of goals from Brennan Johnson and one apiece in the second half from Djed Spence and Dejan Kulusevski ensured Tottenham’s 4-1 victory at Ipswich having navigated their way through a tricky start at Portman Road.
James Maddison mocked Ipswich fans with one of his tattoos
Maddison was the subject of some treatment from the Ipswich home supporters whilst he warmed up on the touchline in the first half, with fans quick to remind him of his time playing for their bitter rivals Norwich City.
The playmaker turned out for Norwich 53 times in all competitions during his time at Carrow Road and has often rubbed salt in the wounds of Ipswich fans, including in April of last year.
Maddison played a key part in Djed Spence’s first Premier League goal for Tottenham, showing neat footwork to tee up the defender.
After the match, Maddison took to social media to post a photo of himself and Brennan Johnson along with a caption of “Johnson again ole oleeeee COYS”, rounded off with three loveheart emojis, one in white to represent Tottenham, and two in yellow and green for Norwich.
Maddison was also not shy to point to a tattoo of a canary on his arm, in reference to Norwich City’s club crest.
Maddison will be keen to maintain his current form
Maddison has been impressive in his last two outings against Manchester United and Ipswich, having not only scored but also provided an assist.
Injury issues have previously hampered his ability to maintain a consistent level of performances which also happened earlier in the season when he scored against Hoffenheim but then spent time on the sidelines with a calf injury.
If Maddison can remain injury free for the remainder of the season, it will certainly put Tottenham in a good place to continue their push up the Premier League table and also aim to win the Europa League trophy.
Tottenham are back in action on Wednesday night when they host Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League.
