Kevin Danso insists ‘he is going to push’ Romero and Van de Ven for Tottenham starts

0

Kevin Danso is certainly not going to simply accept his fate as a backup to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, with the Austrian making it clear that he is seeking to challenge the pair for a place in the club’s starting eleven.

Tottenham may not have signed Kevin Danso if not for their injury crisis at centre-back, but the Austrian international certainly looks more than a mere stopgap.

The Austrian defender has hardly put a foot wrong in his first month at N17 and has done all he can to book his place in Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice team.

However, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are now back to full fitness and have made the trip to the Netherlands for the first leg against Alkmaar.

Kevin Danso is excited by the competition for places at Spurs

It remains to be seen if Ange Postecoglou throws the Dutchman and the Argentine straight into the team, but Danso is not going to make things easy for the returning duo.

The 26-year-old admitted that he is looking forward to battling Romero and Van de Ven for a place in the side, insisting that the competition for places can make all of them better players.

When asked if he is excited by the challenge of competing with the pair, Danso said (via Football.London): “100 per cent. We all know what they have achieved at Tottenham so far and how good they are. I am looking forward to that challenge. I’m going to push them, they’re going to push me, and I think a season is very long.

“There are many competitions, there are a lot of games, so it’s about keeping each other on the highest level possible to compete in every competition we’re in, and just try to win every game and make sure that we’re always on form.”

When asked if the competition for places is one of the things that attracted him to Tottenham, the former Lens man said: “100%. I’ve always had to compete in my life, and I thrive off that challenge, playing alongside great players, competing for places with great players, and just being at an amazing club whose ambition is to win things and just to be part of the history of a club like Tottenham.”

Postecoglou will have plenty of scope to rotate his squad

We have seen over the last 18 months that many players have struggled to cope with the intensity required in Postecoglou’s system, particularly centre-backs, who are not used to making regular sprints.

That is why the Australian will need to rotate his Spurs squad much more than he has this season, and in Danso, he now has a reliable option who can step into the team at any time in place of Romero or Van de Ven without significantly weakening the side.
