Ange Postecoglou accused of ‘insane’ Tottenham decision against Bournemouth
Jamie Redknapp admitted that he was in disbelief at what Tottenham Hotspur were doing in the opening stages of the clash against Bournemouth on Sunday, arguing that Ange Postecoglou’s men were inviting trouble onto themselves.
In the end, it would feel like a point gained rather than two points dropped for Tottenham Hotspur, given that they came back from two goals down to level the score in the latter stages of the encounter.
Another positive was that both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven made their comebacks, with both senior centre-backs coming through the occasion unscathed.
However, there were still many concerning aspects of Tottenham’s showing, with one of their tendencies being heavily criticised by Sky Sports pundits.
Jamie Redknapp questions Tottenham’s suicidal tactics
Spurs had a very sloppy start to the game, with the home side giving the ball away in dangerous situations in a few instances.
Cristian Romero was a guilty party, looking extremely rusty on his return to the side while Bournemouth’s first goal came from Pedro Porro surrendering possession.
Jamie Redknapp was particularly peeved by one instance when Yves Bissouma received the ball facing his own goal and was quickly closed down by the Cherries players.
Reacting to that incident and other similar ones, the pundit told Sky Sports (09/03/22): “First 10 minutes of the game, play the ball into [Dominic] Solanke up front – I watched Liverpool this week, I know they were incredibly lucky, they’ve got the best ball-playing centre-back in Virgil van Dijk – they never played out for the first 20 minutes against PSG.
“There’s no point because they’re going to press us, so if Liverpool aren’t going to do that, why are Tottenham trying to play out against one of the best teams at stopping you?”
Roy Keane then added: “It’s okay giving him an option, but he doesn’t have to play it – and if he does play it, play it a little bit soft – he almost forced him to take the two touches.”
There is a method behind the Ange Postecoglou madness
The reason Spurs defenders play those risky passes is that they know that they could potentially be in if they play through the opposition’s press.
However, in order to execute that game plan, one needs midfielders who are extremely press-resistant, but the current Spurs midfield lacks a player in the middle like Mousa Dembele.
Addressing that situation might be one of Postecoglou and Johan Lange’s priorities when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
