Heung-min Son sends rallying cry to Tottenham teammates in pursuit of European glory
Tottenham captain Heung-min Son has urged his teammates to step up and take responsibility ahead of their crucial Europa League last-16 second-leg clash against AZ Alkmaar.
Spurs have it all to do at home on Thursday night as they look to bounce back from a disappointing first-leg defeat.
A Lucas Bergvall own goal was enough to hand AZ Alkmaar the advantage, leaving Ange Postecoglou’s side with no margin for error in the return fixture.
Despite that setback, Tottenham can take confidence from their earlier home performance against AZ Alkmaar this season in the League Phase.
Tottenham secured a 1-0 win courtesy of a Richarlison penalty. That resilience will be needed again if they are to keep their European campaign alive.
Adding to their hopes is the expected return of key players. Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven are all likely to start against AZ in the Europa League. Their presence could be crucial in turning the tie around.

Speaking ahead of the match, Son did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s recent performances, identifying a recurring issue that needs to be addressed.
Son told SpursPlay: “Everybody has to look at themselves. Nobody will help us except on the pitch, I think those guys who are playing need to take more responsibility, as I always say.
“Look, it has happened many, many times – we start sloppy, go behind, and then chase the game. It is not ideal.
“We have to be very strong and make a step forward. You cannot always stay on the same stairs; you have to try to make progress as we move on.”
Mentality and urgency key to a Tottenham turnaround
Son emphasised the importance of mentality, insisting that talent alone is not enough to secure victory.
“The last game is in the past, so we have to look forward, be positive, and take some tough moments because Thursday is another big game at home. We need everyone – the supporters, players, staff, the whole club – to turn this around.”
He added: “Look, quality does not bring wins. The games always need mentality, effort, and care. Hard work always matters. We need to be focused, take it seriously, respect our opponent, and do everything we can to turn it around, especially at home.”
The Europa League clash is set to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, 13 March 2025. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 pm UK time.
