Tottenham randomly labelled ‘not a winning club’ by Italian football legend
Tottenham Hotspur fans will not be happy to hear what has been said about their club by an Inter Milan legend while discussing Atalanta’s current title charge.
It has been 17 years since Tottenham Hotspur last lifted a trophy, which is the longest trophy drought in the club’s history. As a result, a whole generation of Spurs fans have never seen their beloved club lift any form of silverware.
What makes the situation particularly painful is the fact that the Lilywhites have come close to winning some of the biggest prizes in the game on a few occasions but have always failed at the final hurdles.
Inter Milan legend’s painful Tottenham barb
Spurs have been the butt of jokes among rival fans because of their trophy drought, and in the social media era, the club’s brand has become associated with failing.
The term ‘Spursy’ is a demonstration of just that, with the term being used to describe Tottenham’s soft underbelly and their tendency to throw away advantages.
Inter Milan legend Beppe Bergomi has now rubbed salt into the wounds, by claiming that Tottenham are a club which does not win ‘by definition’.
The pundit was asked about comparisons between Atalanta’ss march towards a potential Serie A title win and Leicester City’s Premier League title win in the 2015/16 season.
Bergomi responded to Gazzetta dello Sport (via FCInter1908): “The miracle is more difficult for Atalanta. Leicester was fighting with Tottenham, not a winning club by definition. Atalanta is fighting with Inter, who are among the top eight in Europe, and Napoli, who won the Scudetto two years ago.”
Spurs finally have an opportunity to silence critics
Spurs have an opportunity to rub it in the face of Bergomi and their other detractors by lifting the Europa League this season.
That will also be extremely satisfying for Ange Postecoglou, given the number of doubters who have questioned his methods throughout the season.
However, the Tottenham players will first face the difficult task of overcoming Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarterfinal, which will not be easy since the second leg is in Germany.
