Mauricio Pochettino return could cost Tottenham two Lucas Bergvalls
Spurs fans who are dreaming of Mauricio Pochettino returning to Tottenham may have to give that up for the time being as it has been revealed that the North London club would have to break the bank to re-hire their former manager.
As the speculation continues to run rife over Ange Postecoglou’s future, some curious comments made by one of the club’s former bosses have got some Spurs fans excited.
Earlier this week, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he still dreams of returning to Tottenham, remarking that he has unfinished business at the club.
However, he only took over as USA’s head coach in September of last year and getting him out of that job before next year’s World Cup is expected to prove very challenging.
Tottenham would have to shell out a huge fee for Mauricio Pochettino
Some sources over the last few months have claimed that a clause in Pochettino’s contract makes an exit very difficult until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
Now, comments made by ESPN reporter Jeff Carlisle on the Futbol Americas show have come to light, where he explains just how expensive it would be to get the Argentine out of the USMNT job.
Carlisle explains he was told that the release clause in Pochettino’s USA contract is worth “tens of millions”, adding that clubs would have to pay “at least $20m” to poach the 53-year-old from the US Soccer Federation.
Paying tens of millions to sign a manager is not something Tottenham are accustomed to doing, especially when the playing squad needs investment. Remember, Lucas Bergvall only cost Spurs an initial £8.5m!
Could Pochettino be an option for Spurs in 2026?
Even putting aside the release clause, Tottenham would not expect Mauricio Pochettino to walk away from a project so soon after taking the job.
The Argentine seems determined to lead the USA to a home World Cup and create a legacy in that country.
Daniel Levy may potentially consider a move for Pochettino after the 2026 World Cup, but a lot can change in football in 16 months.
