Ange Postecoglou will love what Dane Scarlett just did on the international stage
Dane Scarlett’s impressive goalscoring record for England’s youth sides continued, with the Tottenham striker once again finding the back of the net for the Elite League Squad (formerly the Under-20s) against Portugal.
Scarlett has been thought of very highly at Hotspur Way from an extremely young age, but the striker’s development has stalled over the last couple of years.
The Tottenham man did not make the kind of impact he would have wanted in his loan spells in the EFL, and one can even argue that Will Lankshear (who is himself out on loan) is perhaps closer to the first-team set-up right now than Scarlett is.
However, the 20-year-old serves reminders of his qualities whenever he features for England age group sides, and he kept up his outstanding record in his latest outing on Friday.
Dane Scarlett captains and scores for England Elite Squad
Dane Scarlett was handed the captain’s armband by Ben Futcher for Friday’s clash against Portugal at the Municipal Stadium in Braga.
The Tottenham man scored the opener on seven minutes, with the centre-forward being in the right place at the right time to guide home from close range.
According to the Spurs official website, it was Scarlett’s 11th goal in the combined 11 matches he has played for for England’s Under-21 and Elite League Squad.
However, the strike was not enough to see the English youngsters emerge with a win as Diogo Monteiro levelled for hosts Portugal on 32 minutes.
Another Tottenham man played all 90 minutes for England
Scarlett was not the only Spurs man who featured for England’s Elite League squad, with a Lilywhite loanee also getting 90 minutes under his belt.
The player in question was Ashley Phillips, who is having another decent season on loan at the Championship, making himself a fixture in the Stoke City backline this campaign.
It was the centre-back’s fourth start at the Under-20 level for England, and the 19-year-old will be hoping that Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff are taking note of his progress.
