Injured Tottenham player could still secure summer transfer exit despite setback

0

Bryan Gil has shown glimpses of his quality out on loan, but has been sidelined with an injury that is expected to keep him out for four months. Despite the setback, reports suggest a permanent Tottenham exit could still be on the cards this summer.

Bryan Gil has spent the 2024/25 on loan at Girona, hoping to revive his career after struggling for regular game time at Spurs.

The 24-year-old has made a decent impression back in his homeland, Gil even earned a 7/10 in our recent ratings of Tottenham’s loaned-out players.

However, just as he was beginning to build momentum, injury struck. Gil’s season has been brought to a premature end, with his injury layoff expected to last four months having had to undergo an operation on the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.

Girona still in the picture despite Bryan Gil’s injury

With Gil out injured, the expectation was that clubs would hesitate to commit to a permanent deal.

Girona, who negotiated a £12.5m purchase clause in his loan agreement, appeared the likeliest option, but there were concerns that Bryan Gil’s injury might scupper Girona’s transfer plans.

Now, according to AS, there’s still a genuine possibility that the 24-year-old will make the switch despite the injury setback.

The report suggests that Girona remain open to talks with Tottenham once his loan deal officially expires on June 30.

That said, the Spanish club are unlikely to trigger the €15m (£12.5m) clause outright. Instead, sporting director Quique Carcel is reportedly weighing up the financial feasibility of a deal, with discussions expected to take place in the coming weeks.

Tottenham, Girona, and Bryan Gil’s stance on a permanent deal

The report further claims that both Girona’s manager and their sporting department remain keen on Gil. They see room for further development in the winger, and despite his injury, they haven’t closed the door on securing his services permanently.

That being said, Girona are expected to push for a reduced fee, given that Gil’s contract with Tottenham runs until 2026. They’ll also want a clearer picture of his recovery before committing to any move.

For his part, Gil would be open to staying at Girona. He’s enjoyed his time there, and with the club’s admiration for him still intact, a deal remains on the table—though much will depend on how negotiations unfold in the coming weeks.
