Ange Postecoglou reveals why he will ‘never rewatch’ Tottenham’s Europa League final
Ange Postecoglou has made an admission about his abiding memories from the Europa League final and has spoken about the pragmatic style of play that Tottenham adopted in Bilbao.
Even though it has been four days since Heung-min Son proudly held the Europa League trophy aloft in Spain, the achievement is still yet to fully sink in for many Spurs fans, the players and everyone else associated with the club.
A whole generation of Tottenham fans had never witnessed their side lift any silverware, which explains the emotional scenes during the trophy parade on Friday.
While this win does not guarantee that Postecoglou keeps his job, it has ensured that the Australian and the current set of players have written their names into the club’s folklore by being the side who finally broke Tottenham’s trophy drought.
Ange Postecoglou admits he will not watch the final back
Many Spurs fans admit to having never watched even the highlights of their Champions League final defeat in 2019, given how painful that experience was.
However, you can bet that many of them would have watched the final moments of the Europa League final several times already.
Postecoglou has now revealed that he will never watch back the events of that night as he does not want to tarnish the amazing memories he has from the game.
When asked if he has watched back the Europa League final, the Tottenham head coach responded (via Football.London): “No, I’ve always done that my sort of whole career. Unless I get drawn into it when people start talking to me about it, I don’t think about it a lot. When I get to the end of my career, I’ll have more time to understand how I ended up in this place from where I started.
“I tend to leave the moments in perfect periods of time. I’ll never rewatch Bilbao. I’ve never really rewatched any significant game I’ve won in my career because if I do I’ll start picking holes in the performance and I don’t want to do that. It’s the perfect memory for me.”
Postecoglou makes an admission about Tottenham’s defensive approach
Many were surprised that Postecoglou decided to be pragmatic for the final and defend in a low block, although you can argue that he perhaps did not have a choice after losing James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall to injuries.
Some have pointed out that the final was a boring spectacle for neutrals, but Tottenham fans certainly do not care, and neither does Ange Postecoglou.
He added: “I don’t care if people say we didn’t play well. It doesn’t bother me. For me, that night will stay in my memory forever as a perfect night. Then I kind of leave that in its rightful place and move on to what the next thing is.
“At some point, if you chart the course of my last sort of 26 years and beyond from where I started, it’s fair to say it’s a pretty rare journey I have been on and I feel pretty lucky to have been on it.”
