Eddie Howe breaks silence on ‘very good’ AC Milan ace but insists there are ‘no updates’ on the Newcastle transfer front
EDDIE HOWE has admitted his admiration for AC Milan star Malick Thiaw for the first time.
Reports emerged on the continent yesterday that the 22-year-old Germany international was set to reunite with Sandro Tonali on Tyneside.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has broken his silence over a ‘very good player’ they are linked with[/caption] Toon are keen on signing AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw[/caption]But the Newcastle boss is adamant that there are “no updates” to report in the negotiations with the Serie A club.
The centre-half, 22, has been scouted by several Premier League clubs previously.
It then emerged that the Magpies were also keen as speculation mounted that he had agreed terms over a St. James’ Park switch.
Howe has now revealed that he is a big fan of Thiaw after getting a close-hand look at him in the Champions League last season.
Although he insists that nothing new has developed regarding a potential transfer move as he prepares his team to face Urawa Reds in Japan tomorrow.
He said: “There are no updates on that…I’m always reluctant to comment on these things.
“But he is a player I know about. Of course I do, from our games in the Champions League against Milan.
“He is a very good player but that is it.”

One of the main stumbling blocks is believed to be Milan’s asking price for Thiaw.
SunSport understands that they are looking for at least £30m – but Toon chiefs currently feel that price is too high.
Ex-Schalke star Thiaw made his big breakthrough with Schalke in the Bundesliga.
His displays for them led to Milan paying £6m for his services in 2022 but he slipped down the pecking order last term.
Howe’s main objectives on the transfer front are thought to be a new right-winger and striker.
But he also hopes to add some defensive reinforcements with his £100m kitty.
Lloyd Kelly, 25, has arrived on a free after his contract at Bournemouth expired.
But with both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman sidelined until later this year due to ACL injuries, he is also believed to be looking at bringing in cover.
Howe and Newcastle’s new sporting director Paul Mitchell are now continuing their recruitment drive while on their Japan tour this week.
