A BRIT fugitive who fled Australia on a jet ski has been arrested after speeding 90 miles to Papua New Guinea in a bid to dodge drug charges.
The 57-year-old, who is wanted in Western Australia, set off from Cape York, northern Queensland on Monday.
But he was tracked by police, so officers from three different agencies chased him on a border force vessel.
They caught up with him on the eastern side of Saibai Island, which lies two and a half miles south of Papua New Guinea.
Officials believed he was armed with supplies, a crossbow, and carrying enough fuel for the 140km trip across the Torres Strait.
The man, who has not officially been identified, was found on mudflats.
A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police said: “This arrest sends a strong message to would-be fugitives – our reach across Australia is second to none and we will use all our contacts and relationships to find you and bring you before a court.”
He has been taken to Thursday Island, off the Queensland coast, where is awaiting extradition to Western Australia.
