Speaking on today’s This Morning, the 43-year-old star was quizzed by hosts Holly Willoughby, 38, and Phillip Schofield, 57, on whether her character was truly dead.

After Holly admitted that she doesn’t believe the character is gone, Keeley said: “It’s extraordinary. You can be blown up on screen and still people, I think, would be fine, just accept it if I walked right back in.

“I just don’t know what to say anymore.”

But that wasn’t enough for Holly and Phillip, who continued to ask if Julia was “genuinely” dead, and suddenly Keeley played coy as she repeatedly said “Yes” before laughing.

Bodyguard fans were left devastated when Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley, died in a bomb explosion in episode four of the hit BBC drama.

A terrorist attack killed her character as she made a speech which was thought to include a leadership bid.

Julia’s bodyguard David Budd, played by Richard Madden, was bereft after police informed him his part-time lover and full-time employer had been killed in the attack.

For the first 15 minutes of the show, viewers had no idea if Julia had survived the blast, but eventually, it was revealed she had succumbed to her injuries.

Speaking with the Radio Times writer Jed Mercurio told fans Julia is definitely dead and why he killed her off.

He said: “I think there’s a certain expectation with series TV that it will always orbit around an equilibrium, in which nothing much changes for the main stars, and there are no drastic changes to the set-up, especially now things tend to run for several series.

“But, with my work, I like to try to do things that move the story on, and with Bodyguard I wanted to have this event mid-series that would completely alter the dynamic.”
