My father-in-law won’t play ball over his holiday flat and I’m paying the bills

0

DEAR DEIDRE: MY father-in-law could not afford to keep on a holiday flat in Cyprus when his wife died three years ago so he gave it to my wife and her brother.

He did not transfer it over legally but promised to, so my wife and I have been paying all bills and upkeep along with my brother-in-law.

We are 40 and my wife’s brother is 43. Their father is 69.

He wants to take his football team there. We can foresee it being a very beery trip.

We said we’re not happy with this but he said, “I am not asking, I am telling you”.

We’ve been paying all the bills but have no voice.

DEIDRE SAYS: Legally it is still his flat so you can’t stop him. Remember he is widowed and perhaps relieved to find he still has a life.

I hope he still cares about the place enough to make sure that his friends don’t trash it, but be firm that he will be responsible for putting right any damage.

Your wife and her brother should insist then that he officially transfers owner- ship to them – or resumes paying for it himself.
