Kate Middleton and Prince William erect a huge £15k hedge at Kensington Palace to stop tourists peeking in and ‘seeing them fly in and out via helicopter’
PRINCE William and Kate Middleton have erected a huge 950-feet-long hedge in their back garden at Kensington Palace to “prevent tourists peeking into their home”.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who live in the London residence with their three children, are also keen to stop the public “taking pictures of them arriving and leaving by helicopter”.
According to the Daily Mail, it is hoped the hedge, estimated to cost £15,000, will cut out the back view of Kensington Palace when it grows above head height.
The three-feet-high laurel hedge has been planted in recent days, with labourers erecting 600 trees around 18 inches apart.
Typically laurel hedges grow around 2ft per year, so it could take a few years before they conceal the royal residence from view.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, along with other royals, fly in and out of the capital almost daily via the Royal helicopter, it has been reported.
The helicopter is landed on Perks Field, in the grounds of the palace, and the royal couple are said to have felt they had “no choice” but to plant the hedge due to growing numbers of tourists.
Prince William and Kate have increased the time they spend at their Kensington Palace abode, and have “now decided they no longer want members of the public see them leaving or arriving.”
Numerous royals have been spotted in the distinctive maroon-coloured Royal helicopter.
Prince Harry and Meghan were photographed landing after touring the UK, and the Queen used the aircraft to fly into meet her great grandson, Prince Louis.
It’s not the first time the royals had modified Kensington Palace to keep away prying eyes.
In 2017, more than 200 mature trees were added to create a secret garden in the grounds, so Prince George and Princess Charlotte would have a private playground away from the public.
The cost of this privacy measure was £20,000 to the taxpayer.
A palace spokesman said: “From time to time adjustments are made to the landscaping and gardens, including hedging.”
