BLOATED EU bureaucrats have wasted more taxpayer cash deciding that veggie burgers should be renamed veggie discs

MEPs could force through new rules to protect meat terms like burgers and sausages from being used to describe a veggie alternative.

The European Parliament’s agriculture committee approved a ban on producers of veggie food using the same words to describe their own products.

It would include the words steak, escalope, burger, sausage and hamburger under the proposed new rules.

The measures will soon be voted on by all MEPs in the European parliament, before its put to member states and the European Commission too.

French socialist MEP Éric Andrieu, responsible for overseeing the legislation, said the prohibition was just “common sense” and he appealed to Europeans’ sense of foodie history.

“You can have a steak or burger, you can’t call it something else,” he argued.

“We felt that steak should be kept for real steak with meat, and come up with a new moniker for all these new products.

“People need to know what they are eating.”

Veggie discs and quorn tubes are just two name that have been floated to be used instead of burgers.

The meat-free lobby is firmly opposed to the plans and said it would harm consumer trade.

MEPs who are against the bizarre move suspected that the moves had come from the meat industry who felt threatened by people moving to veggie and vegan diets.

Green MEP Molly Scott Cato said: “It wasn’t as if people were buying veggie burgers and asking: ‘Where’s my meat?’

“People are moving increasingly towards a plant-based diet, and young people at a terrific speed.”

Thankfully for veggie burger lovers, it could be years before the new laws come into place, if at all.
