THE NHS isn’t the only health service that serves up “dodgy” food to patients as Brits reveal hospital cooks in Spain are at it as well.
One holidaymaker languishing in the Benidorm resort’s Villa Joyosa Hospital shared snaps on Facebook of unpalatable-looking meals dished out during his stay.
One was just ham and cheese with a bread roll and dish of fruit.
Rory Newell-Brown posted on a Facebook page: “If anyone is planning a trip to the hospital at Villa Joyosa whilst on their holiday to Benidorm – you’re in for a gastronomic treat.”
The grim-looking grub was reminiscent of the food served up in hospitals up and down the UK.
But many followers on Benidorm-Seriously were quick to defend the Spanish health system.
Sharon wrote: “You are in the hospital for health care (which in my experience is second to none) not the food.
DINING DEBATE
“It’s not a restaurant it’s a national health provider. Take your own food that’s what we do.”
Caz said: “Most people have relatives bring food but what is provided is adequate. May not be palatable but hey, it’s free.”
And Faye said: “English commenting on an English site about Spanish hospital food…. the Spanish dont moan as it’s normal spanish food… how many English come here and moan about the food in the hotels but to complain about food in the hospitals is shocking.”

But Alicia posted a snap of food from the town’s Imed Hospital and wrote: “My grandads meal in the Imed hospital.
And another person responded: “It’s no better in lmed private hospital or clinica Benidorm.”
But Luke said of the Villa Joyosa facility: “ I stayed there for a week fantastic hospital better than the UK by miles the food is not English but it’s free at least they don’t put you in the corridor like they do back home.”
