The Vignelli Centre for Design Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York was tasked with digitising Unimark’s records when an employee came across the retro designs.
They uploaded their incredible find to Instagram, along with the story of how they were received at the time.
A caption on one image reads: “In 1973, Unimark did a series of studies of the McDonald’s stores.
“They analysed everything and interviewed employees, managers, and customers.
“They found the apple pie packaging was universally loved, but questioned whether the McDonald’s symbol should be on the trash cans.
“Also the uniforms were definitely not ‘exciting’ enough.”
Current McDonald’s staff and customers seemed to be lovin’ the Cold War-era designs.
One wrote: “Very 70s colours. We should use brown more.
Another added: “I work at McDonald’s as my day job and this would be an improvement to their current packaging.”

And Alexandra Lange said: “This is the most 1973 thing I’ve ever seen.”
News of the unearthed designs comes after a man was left fuming when his McDonald’s Uber Eats order came crawling with flies.
And an ex-employee of the franchise recently shared her secret tips and tricks for how to win prizes in the McDonald’s Monopoly game.
