Others got in a stew that pastry and bacon were included after the dish was posted online at Reddit.com.
But some UK foodies said it looked delicious even though it wasn’t traditional.
Reddit user PolaroidPrincessPain showed off her mum’s shepherd’s pie recipe after making it for her husband’s birthday.
It includes paprika, a shortcrust pastry base, turkey bacon and garlic mash.
PolaroidPrincessPain wrote: “Best damn shepherd’s pie I’ve ever had!”
‘WHY IS THERE PASTRY?’
But others weren’t so sure and mocked the beefed-up version of an English classic.
TrainingFor500Race said: “This is an abomination.”
Rowanx3 posted: “I dont even think the fact they called a cottage pie a shepherd’s pie is the worst part.
“Why the xxxx is there pastry and bacon in it. Lmao?”
Englishman here, you do not put bloody pastry (or normal pastry for that matter) in a shepherd’s pie or cottage pie

PorkAmbassador added: “Englishman here, you do not put bloody pastry (or normal pastry for that matter) in a Shepherds Pie or Cottage Pie.”
Generic_Brand_Cola joked: “Why is there pastry? Why is there beef? Where is the gravy? What about the swede? I am sad now.”

One person pointed out shepherds couldn’t afford to make pastry.
And one English poster said they felt “slightly offended” by the recipe.
The Card quipped: “Beef in a shepherd’s pie? what? You know what animals a shepherd looks after, right?”
Reddit_cmh mocked: “Americans don’t think anything is a pie unless it has a bottom crust.
‘PROUD TO BE BRITISH’
“So this poor soul thought it was supposed to have the bottom crust based on the name alone. Bless their heart.”
LeChef777Returns wrote: “This thread makes me proud to be British. It’s absolutely fantastic.”
FieldMarshalFry said: “The Americans are at it again.”
Another poster joked that PolaroidPrincessPain had committed “cultural appropriation.”
But the US cook’s pastry-base found favour with some pie-munching Brits.
‘TO HELL WITH TRADITION’
And many were delighted about the inclusion of bacon in the shepherd’s pie rehash.
PepperUrAngus: “Obviously not traditional, but as a Brit I say to hell with tradition.
“Looks delicious. Needs a new name, though.”
Blueshyperson enthused: “It looks absolutely delicious despite not being traditional which is apparently all that is allowed here.
“My version looks nothing like yours and includes corn! I’m sure they’d love it here.”
Lastedrexking beamed: “Good work. Adding pastry to something can only be a good thing.”

INITMalcaris wrote: “Bacon doesn’t need an excuse, only an opportunity.”
But PolaroidPrincessPain defended the US take on shepherds pie.
The US cook said: “Let me take solace in the fact that I enjoyed what I cooked, since everyone else on the internet hates it.”
