The shock twist came after Corbett, an undercover cop trying to expose police corruption, tried to leave the organisation of criminals he was running.
But the group turned on him after realising he was still in cahoots with the force, and lured him into a trap involving a group of prostitutes.
As he lay bleeding on the floor gang member Lisa McQueen, played by actress Rochenda Sandall, leant over him and snarled: “You’re a rat John, a rat” after he was caught out.
Viewers took to Twitter immediately to discuss the shock twist and Corbett’s grisly end.
