Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made his feelings clear despite the 37-year-old Spaniard working for another of his former clubs – Real Madrid.

Since his retirement from playing, the ex-Liverpool man has been coaching various teams in the youth system at the Bernabeu.
However, Zinedine Zidane recently promoted Alonso to Madrid’s Juvenil A team, but Rummenigge did not let that stop him from making his feelings known.

He said: “He’s training as a coach in Spain and it seems he will coach the under-19s team at Real Madrid next season.
“I think we have to make an effort to bring him back to Bayern at some point.”
Aside from his football ability, the German could not hide his admiration of Alonso as a person.
He said: “The best midfielder that we’ve had in recent years in the middle was Xabi Alonso.
“He wasn’t the quickest but he was the best strategically and the most intelligent I’ve ever seen in our midfield.

“He was a marvellous player who speaks four languages, and German fluently, he was a a real personality.
“I’d like him to return to Bayern one day, he’s a true gentleman.”
Bayern are top of the Bundesliga, two points clear of second-place Borussia Dortmund with three games to play.
