But while it means they can sip their drinks safe in the knowledge they won’t spill, it seems to defeat the object of cutting down on plastic to save the environment.
@Endless_No1 wrote on Twitter: “Much respect to McDonalds for trying to cut on plastic disposal and use paper straws.
“So when I next get a drink, I’ll be asking them to use a coffee cup lid for my drink.
“Thank me later.”
THE IRONY
McDonalds’ new straws are eco-friendly and were bought in over concerns about plastic pollution.
Over 30,000 people have signed a petition to get rid of them saying they “aren’t fit for purpose” and have even vowed to boycott the chain altogether.
But some are pleased with McDonalds’ action and have criticised the coffee cup idea.

Others pointed out how ridiculous it is that McDonald’s cut down on its straws, but not its other plastic products.
Sara Irwin said: “Switches to paper straws, still gives out 1000s of plastic toys.”

“They were introduced following customer feedback, and we are pleased to be doing the right thing in removing plastic.”
