Wolf put his side in front when he netted a tap-in in the 37th minute – but his ecstasy turned to agony 15 minutes from the end.
The attacker had skipped away from Bordeaux defender Jovanovic with a smart backwards header but was brought down, with his right ankle snapping to the side at a right angle after being caught with Jovanovic’s left foot.
Swedish referee Andreas Ekberg gave just a yellow card to begin with but then brandished a red after consulting VAR.
One social media user said the break reminded them of Henrik Larsson’s infamous injury when he was playing for Celtic.
Wolf now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines before he can make his Leipzig and Bundesliga debut having sealed a move from their sister club RB Salzburg.
He made a name for himself in Salzburg’s Uefa Youth League-winning team of 2017 and was recruited by Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick.

The head coach said of Wolf: “Hannes caught our attention due to his prominent development, which is reflected in his numerous national and international outings, in spite of his young age.
“His strengths make him a versatile option across the attacking midfield. I’m delighted he’s decided to take the next step in his career with us here.”
Austria went onto win the game 2-0 thanks to a 78th-minute goal from Sascha Horvath, with Real Madrid new boy Luka Jovic unable to score for Serbia.
