Beauty fans praise Philosophy’s ‘holy grail’ £28 blackhead extractor clay mask which unclogs pores from first use
AS far as skincare woes go, blackheads aren’t exactly the easiest to tackle.
But while everyone and their aunt has dabbled with pore strips – with very limited success – in the past, a Philosophy clay mask has racked up countless five-star reviews online from customers who claim it worked wonders on their complexion.

- Philosophy Purity Pore Extractor Clay Mask, £28 from Boots – buy now
Part of the American brand’s Purity range, Philosophy’s £28 Pore Extractor Clay Mask is infused with salicylic acid and natural exfoliants.
The gentle formula draws out impurities and shrink pores from the first use without leaving users with that oh-so-familiar tight, irritated sensation.
But not only does the clay mask promise to leave skin looking rejuvenated and hydrated, it also scrubs away blackheads by bringing them to the surface of the skin.
Depending on your skin type, Philosophy recommends concentrating the product around the T-zone and impurities.

After 10 minutes (or however long you fancy, if you’re anything like us), simply rinse with warm water and massage around the face to exfoliate the complexion.
And judging by the swathe of glowing reviews, this Philosophy product – unlike other clay masks- appears to work on both mature and teenage skin as well as dry and acne-prone complexions.
Giving the mask a five-star review, one customer wrote: “I bought this for my teenagers and it’s absolutely fabulous at controlling their breakouts and excess oil around the nose and chin area – pricey for a mask but worth every penny! You don’t need much especially if you are only using it in certain areas.”
Labelling it a “holy grail mask”, an American customer wrote in a review for Ulta: “I tried this product last night expecting it to be just another clay mask but when I woke up this morning I gasped at how beautiful my skin looked! I also noticed that my skin didn’t feel as tight and dry as when I use other face masks.”
Another fan raved: “I used this for the first time before bed and I woke up the next morning with brand new skin. The results keep getting better with continued use and my pores get cleaner with every use.
“It has also helped even out my skin tone and leaves my face feeling soft. I am so glad I tried this!”

What are blackheads and how can you avoid them?
- Blackheads are clogged hair follicles in the skin, where dead skin and oil collects and causes a bump
- Contrary to popular belief, their colour isn’t from dirt – instead, it comes from the inner lining of the hair follicle
- They are not caused by poor hygiene, but instead from excess oil production by the sebaceous glands or greasy products
- Oil production is often caused by hormones, so blackheads are most common in teenagers, and during a woman’s menstrual cycle
- Avoid touching your face too much, and keep your hair clean and away from your face as much as possible
- Also, make sure you wash your pillowcases regularly, as the build-up of dead skin cells and grease from your hair can rub into your pores as you sleep
