Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is stepping up his transfer business having already signed Dan James from Swansea and with a £50million move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka imminent.
Evening Standard report that Solskjaer wants to add two more midfielders to his squad following the departures of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.
And United are confident they will succeed in their pursuits of Fernandes, 24, and Longstaff, 21.
The Red Devils have reportedly been thoroughly scouting the pair in recent weeks.
Old Trafford chiefs are understood to have held numerous talks with Sporting Lisbon over a £70m move for the Portugal international.
And, in a boost for United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are believed not to have any serious interest in Fernandes despite repeated links.
The Sporting star’s agent Miguel Pinho was due to arrive in London this week to discuss a potential Old Trafford switch.
Solskjaer is also determined to sign Longstaff in his quest to inject more homegrown talent into his side.
United are reportedly the only Premier League side chasing the Newcastle starlet, who could be available for a mere £25m.
