A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy and his father, aged 29, have drowned in a double tragedy in Spain.
Police are investigating the sequence of events which led to the shocking deaths off the beach of Riells de L’Escala in Girona.
Sunbathers, including families with children, watched in horror as lifeguards went into the sea to rescue the toddler whose body was spotted floating in the water. He was unconscious and they started resuscitation until emergency medics arrived on the scene.
His heartbroken mother then realised her husband was also missing and a major search was launched, with a police helicopter landing on the beach.
As the search continued, it was revealed that the boy had died.
Witnesses said they had seen both the child and his father together just before the tragedy.
Police, a fire crew and Maritime Rescue took part in the search, also using a boat and a jet ski from the lifeguard service.
About an hour and a half later, a thermal camera picked out the body of a man about three metres deep in the sea.
Once recovered, it was confirmed it was the boy’s father. Both were of French nationality and believed to have been on a family holiday in Spain.

A psychological support team was brought in to care for the mother and other distressed people on the beach.
Police said the beach had a surveillance and lifeguard service and at the time of the event it was flying the green flag which signals calm conditions.
It is not yet known if the boy got into trouble and the father tried to save him or if the man became ill whilst in the water.
