SENIOR Tory MPs want PM Boris Johnson to defeat a Remainers’ bid to oust him by calling an immediate General Election.
No10 is braced for a no confidence vote in the PM when the Commons returns in two weeks.
But the rules dictate it’s for the Prime Minister to decide when to hold the no confidence vote once it has been tabled, as long as it is timely.
Ex-Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “If a confidence vote is called, an option for the PM is to call an immediate vote for a General Election instead.
“For the Labour party to refuse that would mean a total loss of face, and we would win that Election, as it would be fought on who governs Britain and saving Brexit.”
A snap nationwide poll would end Remainers’ hopes of replacing the PM with a government of national unity to delay Brexit.
Another ex Tory Cabinet minister, David Davis, also backed an early poll but warned Boris he faced a serious threat to winning a new majority from Nigel Farage’s Brexit party.
BOJO FIGHTS BACK
The PM has hit back at Philip Hammond and senior Tories in a reply to their letter to him last week warning about the damage of a No Deal Brexit.
Boris accused the ex Chancellor of making it more likely Britain will leave the European Union without a deal.
Boris will this week visit Berlin and Paris and tell Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron that Parliament cannot cancel Brexit.
Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will today make his first speech ahead of an Autumn poll in a bid to start framing the battleground for it.
He will address activists in the key Tory marginal seat of Corby and will accuse Boris of pursuing “not so much a No Deal Brexit as a Trump Deal Brexit”.
