FAYE Brookes and Gareth Gates secretly split one month ago after his “controlling” behaviour raised red flags.
The Sun Online revealed the former Corrie star, 31, and the Pop Idol star, 35, had called off their engagement last week – but a source has revealed their relationship was over weeks before that.
A source told us: “Faye and Gareth actually split a month ago but she hadn’t been wearing her ring for some time.
“Things had been building up for a while and Faye knew something wasn’t right. In the end she called things but he knew it was coming.”
However, it seems that old problems in their relationship resurfaced, as the actress grew aware of Gareth’s “controlling” behaviour concerning her future career plans after leaving Coronation Street.
The insider continued: “Faye is such an independent and strong woman and she found Gareth’s controlling nature hard.
“He was desperate to manage her and take charge of her career but she really wasn’t keen on the idea. He kept pushing for it and in the end she had enough.
“His want to manage her started to really raise questions and red flags for her. That on top of the fact that he spends so much time abroad just made it really tricky.”
“Faye has a really bright future and he knew that after her recent Kate Connor scenes but she wants to do things on her terms.
“She’s auditioning a lot at the moment and it won’t be long till she’s back on our screens.”
The Sun Online has contacted reps for the pair for comment.
The news comes shortly after insiders revealed that Gareth’s relationship with his ex wife, Suzanne Mole, 44 was partly to blame for their split as it caused a serious of jealous rows between Gareth and Faye.
A friend of the pair told The Sun Online: “It was hard for Faye having to share Gareth with another woman.
“She always felt she was bottom of his list of priorities, behind work.
“Gareth travels a lot for work, and when Faye was on Corrie, they’d have hardly any time together, yet he’d be on the phone to his ex.
“Nothing was going on at all, and she had no reason to be worried, but it turned toxic and they’d always be rowing about it.
“She’d check up on his social media, almost like she didn’t trust him.
“Everyone’s gutted as they really did love each other and could have sorted things out but it all got too intense with the arguments.”
And following the announcement last week the singer is thought to have taken back the £30,000 engagement ring he gave to Faye.
Faye has cancelled her plans to move to London to pursue her career, but doesn’t know who to confide in about the split, as Gareth warned her people could sell her story for financial gain.
A separate source close to Faye – who played Kate Connor in the ITV soap – previously told The Sun Online: “Gareth convinced her people just wanted to make money out of her and not to trust them.
“Even those with the best of intentions are scared to offer advice in case it backfires”.

The former couple have dated on and off for the last seven years, with Gareth proposing in January this year.
However, their romance has not always been smooth sailing as they split in September last year, only to reunite and get engaged four months later.
And this isn’t the first time that Gareth has been accused of being “controlling” either, as The Sun revealed their split last year was because of his refusal to let Faye socialise with her Corrie co-stars without him, which led to constant rows.
An insider said at the time: “At certain points in their relationship Gareth was very controlling. He wasn’t always happy with Faye going on nights out with her friends from work without him which inevitably led to arguments between them.”
