MTV VMAs 2019: Demi Lovato accused of ‘throwing shade’ at Taylor Swift with cryptic Instagram post on why she missed the ceremony
DEMI Lovato has been accused of “throwing shade” at Taylor Swift with a cryptic Instagram post on why she snubbed the MTV Video Music Awards.
The 25-year-old singer was notably absent from the star-studded do last night, which saw Taylor win the coveted Video of the Year gong.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that as the 29-year-old accepted the award, Demi took to her social media page to seemingly share her response.
Simply written on a plain black background, the former Disney star wrote: “I skipped the VMAs for a REASON”.
She added: “Well that, and I just hate award shows” alongside the crying-with-laughter emoji.
Fans were shocked by Demi’s apparent dig, taking to Twitter to share their reaction to the brunette beauty’s comment.
One wrote: “I think Demi just threw some shade at Taylor… Girls why can’t we all just get along?!”
A second tweeted: “Hey Demi… Explain to us what Taylor did to you that makes you think she deserves the shade you throw at her…”
However, others insisted that there had been a misunderstanding, with one fan writing: “Y’all are taking Demi’s Instagram posts the wrong way.
“She was not shading Taylor at all, she is teasing a new project that she is working on and she will announce it soon.
“PS Not every thing is about Taylor.”
Demi and Taylor used to be close friends, forming a bond in 2008, and when Demi went to rehab for the first time in 2010 she revealed that Taylor was one of the only people to reach out.
She said at the time: “I lost friends when I came out of treatment because I realised who wasn’t there for me. I can list about five or six people that called me and made sure that I was okay.
“Taylor Swift sent me an email saying, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you have a phone right now, but are you okay?”
However, their friendship started to fall apart when Demi dated Taylor’s ex Joe Jonas in that same year.
Although the romance was short-lived, and Joe dumped Demi, the beauty was said to be unimpressed with the drama Taylor had put her ex through in the past – which included publicly slamming him during an appearance on Ellen, and writing songs about him.
Selena Gomez also appeared to be a catalyst in the two women’s downfall, with she and Demi close friends from when they appeared on Barney and Friends together as children.
However, as Selena grew closer to Taylor she appeared to distance herself from Demi, with Demi being caught on camera telling a fan to “ask Taylor” when she was asked how Selena is.
In 2016, Demi took another swipe at Taylor when she subtweeted the singer for being a “fake feminist” when she didn’t speak out in Kesha’s support during her abuse case against Dr. Luke.
Slamming Taylor for using feminism as part of her brand but not following through, she tweeted: “I’m also ready for self-proclaimed feminists to start speaking out or taking action for women’s rights.”
She added to Glamour magazine: “I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they’re going to claim [feminism] as part of their brand.”
Addressing Taylor’s Bad Blood music video directly, she continued: “I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment. We all do things that aren’t, but I have to ask myself, ‘Am I content with calling myself a feminist?’ Yes, because I speak out.”

She also slammed Taylor’s privileged upbringing, sniping “I didn’t grow up with money”, and publicly sided with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West during their feud with Taylor.
Most recently, Demi defended Scooter Braun when Taylor publicly slammed him for having ownership of her entire music catalogue.
She said at the time: “I have dealt with bad people in this industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man.”
Taylor has famously had feuds with several other stars throughout her years in the spotlight, including Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj in addition to Kimye, Demi, and Scooter.
