Children urged to break the habit of taking anti-depressants before they get hooked

CHILDREN are being urged to break the habit of taking anti-depressants — before they get hooked.

Rising numbers of under-18s take the prescription drugs to tackle anxiety or pain.

Nearly 110,000 children aged 16 to 18 receive the drugs — up nearly 7,000 on just two years ago, NHS figures show.

Almost 500,000 prescriptions were handed out to them last year.

The number of under-16s on the medication have risen to 23,205 from 21,599 in 2016.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said:  “Evidence shows changing behaviour, increasing exercise and strengthening relationships can do much to improve mental health.”
