He said the men screamed “speak f***ing English” at the victim while punching and stomping on him.
Clive, who used to work as a ministerial adviser in Oman and now runs a street food stall, said he intervened after the boy was stamped on “about five times”.
He told the Manchester Evening News: “I shouted ‘the guy’s on the floor, leave him be’.
“I don’t have a great recollection after that, but I think one of the men said to me ‘you want to be next?’”
He said he blacked out after he was hit.
Footage taken on a mobile phone by an onlooker appears to show a man approaching Clive before knocking him out.
The two men were then seen running into a pub.
When Clive regained consciousness he went back into his house covered in blood and phoned the police, who got an ambulance.
‘IT’S A HATE CRIME’
He left the hospital the next morning with a broken nose and fractured jaw.
The attack happened on August 24 and has been reported to police.
He added: “The main concern for me is that these guys committed a racial attack that should never happened.
“It’s a racially motivated attack – a hate crime.”
Clive moved to the area in 1990 and is well known in his community for organising engagement projects.
He has to have extensive surgery for his broken nose and is still not able to sleep or eat normally because of the pain.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 11.35pm on Saturday, August 24, police were called to Stretford Road, Hulme to reports that a man had been assaulted.
“The report stated that the victim had spotted another man being assaulted and attempted to verbally intervene before the offender attacked him.
