MAKING an appointment with your GP to talk about your spots is often seen as a last resort for many acne sufferers.
However, a “miracle” acne treatment which has previously only been prescribed by doctors is now available to buy for £10 from Superdrug – and the results are incredible.
As of this week, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have ruled that two products containing benzoyl peroxide can be bought over the counter.
This means that acne sufferers can now stock up on Acnecide’s Face Gel and Face Wash Gel without having to get a prescription from their doctor.
GPs often prescribe products containing benzoyl peroxide to mild acne sufferers to treat cystic spots.
According to the NHS website, benzoyl peroxide works as an antiseptic to reduce bacteria on the surface of the skin and the 5 per cent gel takes around a month to kick in.

That said, a common side effect of benzoyl peroxide is dry, itchy and red skin.
What’s more, users must wear SPF everyday when they’re using it as the formula makes skin more susceptible to sun damage.
Although this new ruling will make it easier for sufferers to stock up on the acne gels, benzoyl peroxide is not suitable for children under the age of 12 and not be used on open wounds.
But for some acne sufferers, the effects this treatment has had can be life-changing.
Urging other spot sufferers to “buy it now”, one impressed Superdrug customer wrote: “After struggling for years with terrible skin since having my implant put in, I was searching everywhere for a product that may even just help slightly with it.
“I eventually found this product and can honestly say that the difference in my skin in just a couple weeks has been crazy!”
Although most users see results within the first month, another added: “Treatment worked within a week and after two weeks my skin was completely clear.
“I absolutely love it – I am so happy. What I love is that it reduces and makes sure my acne inflammation disappears, it clears marks and back acne.”
A third wrote: “I’ve suffered with bad acne for about six years now and I’ve never found anything that cleared it up.
“After using this product, my face instantly cleared up – I’ve never felt so confident in my skin in years – this product is amazing.”
Commenting on the new ruling, a spokesperson for MHRA said: “The move to make Acnecide Face Gel and Acnecide Face Wash Gel more widely accessible will make it easier for people to treat mild acne on the face.
“Wider availability of medicinal products and improved patient access and choice remain high on the health agenda. The MHRA is committed to improving access to medicinal products for self-care where it is safe to do so.”
